Who We Are
The Honest Local is a network of real people living in cities and states across the United States. We write about what it is actually like to live where we live, the good and the bad, with no sugarcoating and no sponsorships influencing what we say.
Why We Stay Anonymous
Our contributors do not use their real names or photos, and that is intentional. When you write honestly about the problems in your city, people get angry. When you say the schools are underfunded or the crime rate in a specific neighborhood is a dealbreaker, you get pushback. We have seen it happen.
By keeping our contributors anonymous, we free them to be brutally honest. No one is softening their take because their boss might read it or their HOA president might recognize them. The anonymity is not a gimmick. It is what makes the honesty possible.
How We Write
Every article is written or reviewed by someone who lives (or has lived) in the place they are writing about. We cross-reference our firsthand experience with public data from the U.S. Census Bureau, Bureau of Labor Statistics, local government records, and housing databases. When residents leave comments correcting us, we listen and update the article.
We do not accept sponsored content, paid placements, or affiliate deals that would influence our recommendations. The site is supported by display advertising through Mediavine, which has no editorial input on what we publish.
What We Cover
Pros and cons of living in every major U.S. city and state. Best places to live guides. Cost of living breakdowns. Neighborhood comparisons. Retirement guides. The kind of information you actually need before signing a lease or buying a house somewhere new.
We publish new guides regularly and update existing ones as conditions change. Data gets stale, housing markets shift, and neighborhoods evolve. We keep our content current.
