The tape refreshes on each source’s own schedule, and most months most readings barely change. An alert goes out only when a reading crosses a line we set in advance, the same line for every place.

• The jobless rate moves more than 0.3 points.
• Gas moves more than 4 percent week over week.
• The air crosses into unhealthy for sensitive groups.

Why one place at a time
