I grew up in a suburb of Atlanta and have personally been to every single one of the best places to live in Georgia on this list. In fact, I have friends and relatives in most of them!
Best known for being home to the University of Georgia, Athens is a charming college town with plenty to see and do. From nightlife and restaurants to shopping and college sporting events, Athens has so much to offer, and it’s located just an hour from Atlanta.
The fact of the matter though, is that Athens is a college town, so sometimes it can be very crowded with major traffic issues – especially during football season and around graduation. Not so much fun if you’re just trying to do errands and commuting.
Athens, however, is one of the best places to live in Georgia if you are looking for affordable housing. The average home cost in Athens is around $290k, making it a great place to buy a home.

The major caveat I’d say is that Living in Atlanta you’ll find the city is quite fragmented and the downtown area is somewhat dull. There are some really fun pockets like Little Five Points, Vinings, and Buckhead but each is spread so far apart that they feel like cities in and of themselves.
For some folks that is an advantage as they can escape some of the not-so-nice crime statistics of downtown.
